Home of the Wolverines
The Wolverines travelled to The Plains, Virginia, and competed on the challenging course at Great Meadows, which is also the site of the VHSL State Championships. Despite some wind, it was ideal weather for cross-country as the temperatures were far more forgiving than the runners have seen in the past several meets. Overall West Potomac did well in the large field for this major invitational contested on a hilly course.
During the Girls Varsity A race the Lady Wolverines showed off their pack as they kept their 1-5 spread within 32 seconds, and the entire top 8 within 1 minute of each other. Junior captain Lily Penn ran a strong race to lead the team with a season best 20:08 5k, Penn was 41st individually. Junior Bowman Shaughnessy was close behind in 20:13 (44th), with senior Claire Barber (20:24, 52nd), senior captain Kaycie O’Boyle (20:32, 63rd), and junior Ripley Vaughan (20:40, 72nd) were the scoring runners for the team. West Potomac placed 7th out of 36 teams.
In the Boys Varsity A race West Potomac was also able to place in the top 10 teams, finishing 9th out of 41 schools. For the third week in a row senior captain Benjamin Weisel led the way for the boys team, placing 30th individually in a strong time of 16:45. Senior Will Makinen also dipped under 17 minutes with his 39th place finish, followed by a trio of sophomores Ethan Payne (75th, 17:20), Wesley Uhrin (87th, 17:30), and David Underwood (134th, 17:51) to round out the team score.
The Lady Wolverines had a number of top 20 performers in the JV races. Sophomore Ellie Messina continued her strong season by placed 6th individually in the JV Underclassmen Girls race, which featured 175 runners. The JV Upperclassmen girls had an outstanding day and nearly pulled out the win, but were runner-up to West Springfield by one point (39-40). as West Potomac had 6 in the top 20 of the field with Jackie Bewick (3rd), Grace Henley (7th), Jenna Mulvihill (8th), Charlotte Anderson (9th), Cat Fidd (16th) and Mary Kate Savage (17th).
For the boys JV races, West Potomac saw significant improvement from its runners. In the JV Boys Underclassmen there were 4 under 20, as freshmen Robert Lamb (19:38), Carson Lynch (19:50), Ryan Bowers (19:57) and sophomore James Duke (19:59) all put together their best races yet. Senior captain Allen Hill (20:46) and classmate Liam Orr (20:54) had very strong races to both set a new personal best in the 5k during the JV Boys Upperclassmen race.
A special thank you to all the parents who came out to support the team, especially those who stayed until the end of the meet and helped us with the broken tent. We really appreciate your assistance!!!!
